Is Your Deck Ready for Summer? A 10-Minute Safety Check

As the weather warms up and backyard season officially kicks off, your deck is about to go from “unused corner of the yard” to the center of family dinners, weekend hangouts, and everything in between. Before you host the first cookout of the year, it’s worth spending ten minutes making sure it’s actually ready to handle the traffic.

Check the boards

Walk the full surface and look — and feel — for soft spots, warping, or boards that flex more than they should. Soft or spongy wood is often a sign of rot underneath, even if the surface still looks okay. Popped or protruding nails and screws are also worth addressing before bare feet find them first.

Test the railings

Grab the railing with both hands and give it a firm shake. It should feel completely solid, with no wobble or give. Loose railings are one of the most common — and most dangerous — deck issues, especially with kids or larger gatherings involved.

Inspect the structural connections

Look underneath at the ledger board (where the deck attaches to the house) and the support posts. Rust on fasteners, gaps between the ledger and the house, or any visible separation are signs that warrant a closer professional look before the deck sees heavy use.

Look for signs of rot or insect damage

Press a screwdriver gently into wood near ground contact points — posts, stairs, and the areas closest to soil. If it sinks in easily or crumbles, that’s a sign of decay that’s more than cosmetic.

Consider the age of your deck

Most wood decks have a functional lifespan of 15-25 years depending on material and maintenance. If yours is approaching that range and showing multiple warning signs at once, a full replacement may be more cost-effective than repeated repairs — and gives you the chance to upgrade to lower-maintenance composite materials.

The bottom line

A deck that looks fine from a distance can still have real structural issues underneath. Ten minutes of checking now means you can host with confidence all summer instead of wondering what’s happening beneath your feet.
