Double Hung
Double-hung windows have 2 large sashes that slide up and down within vertical tracks. Weights concealed in the wall pockets behind case moldings counterbalance sashes in older windows, but in today’s double-hung windows, it is more common for the sashes to be counterbalanced by springs concealed within the side tracks.
Single Hung
Single-hung windows look identical to their double-hung counterparts. You can find them in any home in the United States but are particularly common in the coastal areas or parts of the country with high wind. Unlike the double-hung windows, the defining feature of these windows is the fixed top sash. It means that only the bottom portion of the window is operable.
Sliding
Instead of opening vertically like single-hung and double-hung windows, sliding windows open horizontally by moving from side to side. Sliding windows are popularly used in areas of the home where you might not have the space or leverage needed to easily open a hung window, such as over a washer/dryer or behind a kitchen sink.
Picture
Picture windows don’t open, which makes them the ideal choice for framing great views without sacrificing security or safety. The windows work particularly well in areas of the home with limited access, such as vaulted ceilings and recessed walls. Picture windows are often combined with other window styles to create unique configurations that add charm and character to the home.
Bay
Bay windows are similar to picture windows but instead have angled operable windows on both sides. Bay windows are ideal for living rooms where you want to show off the view while also letting fresh air into the home. Bay windows extend slightly outside the interior wall thereby adding light, depth, and architectural interest to your home.
Casement
Casement windows swing outside when opened via a crank. During installation, you can decide whether you prefer the window hinges to be on the left or right side. These crank-out windows open all the way to give your home more ventilation compared to other window types. That’s why you need to clear nearby trees or bushes that block casement windows.
Awning
Awning windows are essentially casement windows oriented to swing open vertically. Just like casement windows, awning windows also provide good ventilation and usually seal well. You will often find this type of window in bedrooms or in narrow or high places such as above doors since the crank mechanism is rather easy to operate even when some reaching is required.
